Currently my main focus is on patients with diabetes mellitus with loss of protective sensation. Worldwide this patient population is large (422 million) with a percentage as high as 25% that develops diabetic foot ulcers that end up with an amputation and death due to unhealed foot ulcers. This is why currently, the focus of my research is to analyze whether products such as a self-adjusting insole and a 3D printed midsole of which the shape is based on an algorithm for optimal targeted offloading are effective in preventing diabetic foot ulcers.
