Medical Oncology

We aim to improve diagnosis, treatment and quality of life for cancer patients. Department
We aim to improve diagnosis, treatment and quality of life for cancer patients.
We aim to improve cancer care by detecting cancer earlier, by developing better treatments, by improving the prediction of treatment response and by improving quality of life during and after cancer treatment.

During their life, many people will be affected by cancer, either directly or for loved ones. We are all familiar with the devastating impact of cancer on life. The department of Medical Oncology is committed to care, coaching and treatment of patients with cancer and patients that have been cured with cancer.

At the department of Medical Oncology, we combine patient care and research, which allows us to translate between research and practice effectively. With our research we aim to improve the care we give by:

  • obtaining novel insight in the biology of cancer;
  • detecting cancer earlier;
  • treating cancer better, also for patients with rare cancers and specific subgroups of patients;
  • improve prediction of treatment outcome;
  • improving quality of life during and after cancer treatment.

How our research benefits to society

By combining molecular research exploring the biology of cancer, translational studies and clinical trials, UMCG Medical Oncology addresses many relevant problems in the oncological field of research:

  • In Medical Oncology, we approach research problems by a combination of various research tools. For example, biological mechanisms in cancer can be explored using big data or biobanking. Generated hypotheses can then be tested in our translational lab facility using state-of-the-art techniques and innovative imaging techniques can be used to explore their potential in patients. Finally, we can assess the effects of existing and novel treatments are studied in clinical trials.

  • Researchers with backgrounds in medicine, oncology, biology, bio-informatics and artificial intelligence work together to understand cancer better, to think of novel treatment approaches, improve existing treatments and improve life after cancer.
