ZonMw grant awarded for research into stem cell transplantation in a dish

News
Abel Soto-Gamez from the departments of Biomedical Sciences and Radiation Oncology of the UMCG will receive a grant of €127,893 from ZonMw Off Road, including a contribution of €28,118 by Stichting Proefdiervrij. This project will aim to develop a New Approach Methodology to model stem cell transplantation ex vivo.

More about the research

Soto-Gamez’s research focuses on improving stem cell transplantation outcomes for patients with cancer who have developed chronic organ dysfunction because of their treatment. Unfortunately, novel therapeutic strategies for enhancing stem cell transplantation typically reach a bottleneck due to resource intensive animal models with limited translatability. Immunological differences between human and animal models often result in findings that fail to translate to the clinic, especially in the field of transplantation medicine. If successful, the new model may replace in vivo models where animals (mostly mice or pigs) are injured, transplanted with stem cells, and sacrificed shortly thereafter to look for evidence of engraftment of donor cells.
