The Department is active in a wide range of research from the relationship between the genome and the microbiome to the use of organs on a chip in genetics.

Access to the large patient cohort of 167,000 participants from the LifeLines biobank allows researchers to study data from three generations of families from the North Netherlands and lets them explore new ways to share insights with participants through genetic passports.

Clinical genetics also play an important role in the department and the connection between research and the clinic allows patients in Groningen to access cutting-edge analysis in areas such as prenatal exome sequencing.
