It is common knowledge that staying active and healthy while getting older increases wellbeing and participation and helps with quicker recovery from illness. Staying healthy throughout life also reduces the risk of chronic disease and sickness absence.

The PHR research programme focuses on two key public health themes:

  • Prediction and early detection of deteriorating health and disease;
  • Social participation of people with health problems.
Relevance

Opening new routes to prevention

Mounting evidence suggests a major impact of early life experiences on later-life health outcomes.

In addition, the prevalence of chronic disease increases with age and life expectancy is increasing more rapidly than healthy life expectancy. This requires new approaches to increase social and work participation of people with health problems.

  • The PHR researchers conduct research in close collaboration with practitioners and clinical groups from disciplines such as Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Oncology, Neurology, and Rehabilitation and with health professionals such as physical therapists.

    The PHR team is multidisciplinary and consists of public health physicians, social scientists, and health scientists.

    All PHR programme members are closely connected to public and occupational health organizations, as well as other practice-based organizations that can implement the evidence produced by our programme.
