There is an urgent societal and medical need for improved drugs and a more efficient development track for such products. This research programme explores the various fundamental and applied aspects of drug research and development.

The translational approach used brings together researchers in the field of pharmaceutical research and development. Various collaborations have been set up with disease-related programmes and research groups at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). The BDDD research covers all aspects, from drug discovery and design to production, administration, delivery, and toxicology. The programme focuses on:

  • Biopharmaceuticals;
  • Preparation and evaluation of classic small molecule drugs (e.g. enzyme inhibitors).
Relevance

Generating societal and economic value by studying innovative drug concepts

The BDDD programme works on the improvement of drugs and technologies used in drug development, production, administration, and safety assessment. The emphasis is on therapies for age-related diseases (e.g. fibrotic diseases, COPD, and cancer), in accordance with the UMCG’s focus on healthy ageing.

Collaborations have been set up with other researchers from the GUIDE institute and the UMCG, as well as with external parties, including industrial partners. The top-notch research performed in our programme offers an attractive environment for young, talented researchers and has already yielded concrete results:

  • Reduction in the use of animals in disease- and drug safety-related research;
  • New inhalation devices and vaccine formulation strategies;
  • Gene doping detection by next generation sequencing.
